Why Client Confidence Matters More Than Beautiful Websites

Beautiful websites attract attention, but client confidence creates long-term success. Here’s why empowering clients to manage their own WordPress websites has guided my work since 2012.

For the first couple of years of my web design business, I built websites using HTML and CSS. My clients loved the websites I created—but there was one problem.

Most of them weren’t comfortable making changes themselves.

I realized that client confidence was just as important as good design. I wanted my clients to feel confident updating their own websites instead of relying on me for every text edit or image change.

When I shared that concern with my nephew, a software engineer, he gave me advice I’ve never forgotten:

“Find a content management system with a strong community behind it.”

After doing my research, I chose WordPress.

Two things stood out:

  1. There was an active local WordPress meetup where I could learn from experienced users.
  2. Lynda.com offered an incredible library of WordPress training that helped me build my skills.

That decision changed the direction of my business.

Since 2012, I’ve built websites with WordPress as it evolved from traditional themes (Studio Press) to page builders like Beaver Builder and now Full Site Editing (FSE).

Technology has changed, but my goal hasn’t.

Every website I build is designed to build client confidence by making it easier for people to manage their own content while advancing their organization’s goals.

Yesterday, one of my clients shared some wonderful news. Since redesigning their website and making it easier for visitors to take action, they’ve seen a significant increase in calls for their services.

Moments like that remind me that a successful website isn’t just one that looks good—it’s one that helps organizations better serve the people who need them.

That’s when I know we’ve built more than a website. We’ve built confidence.

What technology or piece of advice has had the biggest impact on your career?
